Shatrughan Sinha revisits fight with Amitabh Bachchan on sets of Kala Patthar: ‘Decision about who is stronger between us couldn’t be made’
Shatrughan Sinha recounted the day on the sets of Yash Chopra's 1979 film Kala Patthar where his and Amitabh Bachchan's animosity started. The actor bowed out from films that starred Big B.

Bollywood star Shatrughan Sinha has often spoken about his rivalry with his once-friend Amitabh Bachchan. Recently, the actor recounted the day on the sets of Yash Chopra’s 1979 film Kala Patthar where it all started. Though the veteran star called it ‘immaturity’ now, he agreed it was “arrogance” then.
While speaking to Zoom, Sinha shared that a fight sequence in Kala Patthar was altered in favour of Bachchan which irked him. Narrating the incident, Sinha said, “It was not intentional. We were shooting amicably. There was a fight scene between me and Amitabh which had choreographed by fight master Shetty. While fighting, at one point, my dupe falls and his dupe puts a spade on my dupe’s neck. I was watching all of it while sitting in a corner because I don’t interfere in a film’s shooting.”
Sinha agreed that in those days, there was some tussle between him and Amitabh, though they were friends during their struggle days. He also hinted at ‘romance’ being a probable reason for problems between them. “We have been friends since our struggle days. But in those days, ab romanch ka chakkar raha ho ya romance ka chakkar raha ho, uss samay kuch hua.. (Now whether it was due to romance or thrill, but something happened at that time). I told them this was not in the script but Amitabh’s team approved of the scene,” the actor shared.
Sinha protested against the scene, “I told them, ‘ye toh baat hui nahi thi (this is not what we discussed). What if Shashi Kapoor takes longer to come to stop the fight, my character will be killed, then what is the point of him returning after the interval? Ab isko siddhant bole ya arrogance bole..aur vo defeat na hone vala character toh defeat ho gaya yahan pe.. ispe 4-6 ghanta hua, kuch logon ko pasand nahi aayi ye baat (Now call it principles or arrogance, but the undefeatable character was defeated. The shooting was stalled for 4-6 hours and a few people didn’t like it). Ultimately they changed it and the decision about who is stronger between us could not be made, which was happening in the earlier scenario.”
However, after the scuffle, Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha, who earlier gave hits like Dostana (1980), Shaan (1980), and Naseeb (1981), didn’t share the screen. The two had signed multiple films together but Sinha left them. “A lot of films were being made, but I had to amicably leave some of them. I also returned the signing amount to a few of them,” the actor revealed. Earlier, Sinha had said that Amitabh didn’t share the screen with him because he “could see the response that I was getting.”
Now, as Sinha claims, the two actors have buried the hatchet, and are good friends now. He told Aaj Tak, “Things are good now. Sometimes you clash, then some people also make you clash. Kuch unki harqat, kuch meri (sometimes it was his behaviour, sometimes it was mine). Sometimes it is also the intoxication of stardom and popularity. Ya phir josh mein hosh kho dete hai (sometimes you lose control in excitement).”
