Filmmaker Rohit Shetty’s Cirkus, the highly anticipated movie that was touted as one of 2022’s biggest films, was rejected by movie buffs upon its release in the theaters. Shetty recently said that he takes ‘ownership’ for the failure of the film and doesn’t want to ‘blame’ anyone for it.
The film, which is based on William Shakespeare’s popular play “The Comedy of Errors”, recorded dismal numbers at the box office, Rs 32.10 crore lifetime collection. Cirkus was backed by an ensemble cast including actors Ranveer Singh, Jacqueline Fernandez, Pooja Hegde, and Varun Sharma.
Shetty said that Cirkus was made during the pandemic, keeping in mind the audience of that time. “I know what we did. We, obviously, went wrong somewhere. It was made right after Sooryavanshi and in the middle of the pandemic for the workers. It was a small film meant for the audience of that time,” the filmmaker shared with IndiaToday.in.
But he also agreed that it was the same audience which made his Akshay Kumar-starrer Sooryavanshi a hit, despite it releasing during the coronavirus pandemic. At the time, the cinema halls were operating at 50% occupancy. Taking “ownership” of his failure, Shetty said he is confident he will “bounce back” with his hit Singham and Golmaal franchise. Shetty shared that his team jokes with him, “Every 5 years, you are grounded by such failures.”
Going forward, Rohit Shetty will be seen hosting the thirteenth season of stunt-based reality show, Khatron Ke Khiladi. He also has the web series, Indian Police Force in the pipeline, which is headlined by Siddharth Malhotra. He will also soon begin work on the third Singham film. It will feature Ajay Devgn reprising his role as Bajirao Singham and will be the fifth movie in the filmmaker’s cop universe.
