Former chief minister and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur Thursday blamed the Himachal Pradesh government for pursuing a policy of political vendetta against serving and former MLAs who quit the Congress and joined the BJP over the past three years.

Addressing a press conference, Thakur said that the state government was misusing power to harass BJP legislators through criminal cases. He referred to a recently registered FIR for theft and cheating against Hamirpur BJP MLA Ashish Sharma, accusing him of stealing mining material and minerals worth crores of rupees. The FIR was registered in the first week of December.

Thakur claimed the case was politically motivated and aimed at sending Sharma to jail at any cost. Sharma is a former independent MLA who resigned and later joined the BJP in March 2024. Thakur said that Sharma has been summoned repeatedly and made to sit in the police station for hours over the past 10 days, with non-bailable sections allegedly added to deny him bail.

The LoP alleged that cases were being selectively registered against several BJP leaders and their families, including former ministers and sitting MLAs, as part of political revenge. He cited instances involving K L Thakur, Rajinder Rana, Inder Dutt Lakhanpal, former minister Sudhir Sharma, former Gagret MLA Chaitanya Sharma, Devender Bhutto, Ravi Thakur, BJP state president Dr Rajeev Bindal and others.

Thakur also criticised the Information and Public Relations Department for allegedly running a propaganda campaign against the BJP.

Also raising environmental issues, the LoP questioned the government’s silence on alleged illegal tree felling in Banjar and Dharampur and illegal mining in Una, Sirmaur, Hamirpur and Kangra, alleging inaction where ruling party leaders were involved while the BJP leaders were being targeted.

‘Govt to eradicate chitta, illegal mining, corruption’

The Principal Media Adviser to CM, Naresh Chauhan, rejected the allegations of LoP Jai Ram Thakur. He said nobody is above law and police are doing their duty without any prejudice. Chauhan said, “CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu clearly stated that there will be no compromise with the criminals and their sympathisers. Our government is following zero tolerance for chitta (drug) peddling, illegal mining, corruption and violence against women. BJP leaders are only misleading people of the state. People gave a mandate to the Congress for five years. Our government is working to make the state a crime-free state from all aspects.”
