Rahul Dholakia’s Raees marked the return of Shah Rukh Khan to action films, and the film did quite well at the box office, considering the worldwide collection crossed Rs 280 crore. After facing several casting issues and getting flak from producers, Rahul managed to take the film on the floor, and the final cast of the film included name like Shah Rukh, Zeeshan Ayyub, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Sheeba Chaddha. While the professional hurdles that were faced by Rahul have already been discussed, the director opened up about the personal turmoil he had faced throughout his career.

Talking to ETimes, Rahul pulled back the curtains on his bouts with mental and physical health, an aspect that he likes to keep away from his professional life. Rahul revealed how he dealt with diabetes, high blood pressure and even a heart attack while trying to keep his work going. He admitted that while the health problems are taxing on their own, the pressures of working on the set, while balancing the likes, dislikes and egos of all superstars, producers and members of the crew, add on to the overall weight of the job. Expanding on this situation, Rahul recalled the shooting of Raees and how his personal life was in shambles while shooting arguably the biggest movie of his career.

The director revealed that his own mother was in the ICU during the filming of Raees, but he felt like he didn’t have any choice but to work. He continued that Shah Rukh was already on set and ready for the shoot to begin, and the industry at the time wasn’t at a place where people could openly talk about what all was going on in their lives. With the fear of being dropped running at the back of his mind and chronic pain coursing through his body, Rahul started visiting his mother in the night and would return to the set in the morning like everything was status quo. Even though it was a testing episode of Rahul’s life, he maintained that bringing one’s problems to the set just isn’t right.

Talking about dealing with the immense pressure that comes with the job, the director shared his idea of relaxing and taking time to readjust. He revealed that he chooses to sleep or watch his favourite movies like Legally Blonde, My Cousin Vinny, and Rocky. He further added that time with family, namely his sister and mother, or his friends always helps, and everything seems much more simple to deal with after being around them. While his candour about the problems he has faced proves that conversations around mental health are increasing in Bollywood, Rahul still believes that people keep most of what they go through to themselves because they are afraid of being replaced. He said that in an industry that focuses solely on the performance of an individual and their contribution to the project, no one will come out and accept their weaknesses or problems.
