With the Maharashtra government declaring protocol for government employees on how legislators and MPs elected from the state are to be treated, the Pune civic body has decided to declare VIP status for any written or documented communication of elected representatives of the state assembly and parliament.

“As per the state government directives, the civic Information and Technology department has to make provision of VIP letters registering in the e-office system being used in the PMC. The staff should also be provided with training on its proper use,” said municipal commissioner Naval Kishore Ram.

In-charge of PMC IT department, Rahul Jagtap, said that up until now, any written communication from anyone to the PMC was dealt with under general category.

“We will now provide a provision of a special VIP category for inward and outward written communication to legislators and MPs. This will help the system to easily identify the written communication of legislators and MPs from the thousands of written communications with the civic body on a daily basis,” he said.

In November, the state government had issued a circular with protocol of how legislators and MPs in state government offices are to be treated.

As part of providing good governance, the government offices should immediately reply to written communication from legislators and MPs, enable their active participation in government work, facilitate effective and easy conversation with MLAs and MPs while maintaining transparency, credibility and responsible behaviour of the government office.

As per the government circular, those who do not follow the protocol mentioned will face disciplinary action. “The head of civic departments in PMC should communicate the rules and guidelines on providing respectful treatment to MLAs and MPs while ensuring they are strictly followed,” said municipal commissioner.
