Pankaj Tripathi says he only ate khichdi for 60 days while playing Atal Bihari Bajpayee: ‘It was also cooked by me’
Pankaj Tripathi recently shared how during the shoot of Ravi Jadhav-directed Main Atal Hoon, in which he essays the role of late PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he only ate khichdi to get the emotion of his character right.

Actor Pankaj Tripathi is known for his simplicity. He has often described his love for home-cooked food, and his favourite of them all is khichdi. The actor recently shared how during the shoot of Ravi Jadhav-directed Main Atal Hoon, in which he essays the role of late PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he only ate khichdi to get the emotion of his character right.
During a recent interaction with Film Companion, Tripathi shared, “In Atal, I shot for around 60 days and for those 60 days, I only ate khichdi, that too the one cooked by me.” The actor explained why he didn’t let anyone else cook for him or why he didn’t order it from a restaurant. “You never know how will others make it. I put no oil or masalas in it. I just use simple dal, chawal and local vegetables, which are available,” he said.
Tripathi shared that when he was young he didn’t have to think much about what he ate and could act even after eating a samosa. He said, “When I was young, I could act even after eating a samosa. But now I don’t even remember when I ate a samosa last. Now I need ‘Saatvik’ to keep my system right.”
He also explained why is it important for actors to eat right, not just to stay healthy but also to get the emotions of their character well. Tripathi said, “As an actor, if your stomach doesn’t stay well and you eat something unhealthy and think that you will be able to emote, then you are mistaken. This is why during the day of the shoot, I only eat khichdi.”
He continued, “To get that emotion right, you need to have a sync between the brain and the body. For that, an actor needs to eat light food.”
Main Rahoon Ya Na Rahoon Yeh Desh Rehna Chahiye – Atal is a biopic on the late politician and India’s former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. It will release in the theatres in December. The music for the film has been composed by Salim-Sulaiman with lyrics by Sameer, while Sonu Nigam has rendered vocals for the motion video announcement.
