Veteran filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt had a chequered private life. He had an affair with yesteryear diva Parveen Babi while he was married to Kiran Bhatt and had a daughter, Pooja Bhatt with her. He mirrored his personal life in the 1982 film Arth, starring Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil and Kulbhushan Kharbanda. Later, he fell in love with Soni Razdan and married her. They have two children together, actor Alia Bhatt and Shaheen Bhatt. In a latest interview, Bhatt talked about Soni, and Parveen Babi and how he was advised by his friend, philosopher UG Krishnamurti to leave her if he really loves her.

In a recent conversation with Arbaaz Khan during his chat show Invincibles, Bhatt shared, “Arth which became a path-breaking film was built from the wounds of my failed marriage. People say Parveen’s second breakdown was because of Arth, but I don’t agree. I was talking about my life. It was an autobiographical film which was fictionalised.”

Bhatt shared that he never met Parveen after they parted ways in the 1980s and it was his friend UG Krishnamurti who helped him during this difficult phase of his life. “I did not meet her after we parted ways in the 80s. UG helped me a lot. He told me, ‘You will not be out of this business and she is unfit for this business, if you really love her, leave her.'”

Bhatt also recalled the time when he “hijacked” Parveen Babi and took her to Bangalore for treatment as she suffered from mental illness. Recalling the time, he narrated, “That was the time when I ran away with her. There was a set of Shaan (1980 film) put up and she was a big part of that film. At that time, mental illness was an enigma, and it still is. Doctors said it will take her 6-8 weeks for her to come back to functional normalcy. But they didn’t have that much time, the foreign stuntmen and all… I understand the impatience of the industry because a lot of money was riding on her. That is when I hijacked her and took her away to Bangalore, there was UG there and he told me you have to go away.”

Bhatt shared he doesn’t have happy memories of his relationship with Parveen Babi. Describing her time with her as ‘traumatic’, he said, “It was not a beautiful relationship. When Silsila released, I said that extramarital relationships do not happen in tulip gardens, they take place in a shady, dark land, we will hide, feeling of sin, it was a traumatic phase with Parveen.”

After Babi, Bhatt decided to spend time with his newborn son Rahul Bhat but he once again fell in love, this time with Soni Razdan. “I resisted Soni but I was drawn into the relationship. I remember telling Soni, ‘Don’t come near me, I will destroy you.’ But she said she was ready to be destroyed. This conversation later became a dialogue in my film Raaz.”
