A full year after the first teaser for Vishal Bhardwaj’s Khufiya was unveiled, the film has finally received a release date. Starring Tabu, Wamiqa Gabbi and Ali Fazal, the spy thriller will be released on October 5, just two weeks after Netflix debuts the Kareena Kapoor Khan-starrer Jaane Jaan.

The streamer shared an announcement video featuring the three leads earlier this week, and on Thursday released a date announcement video. In it, Tabu’s character can be seen anxiously observing a suspicious character on CCTV cameras. The person on screen appears to be making some photocopies, the contents of which Tabu’s character is seeking out. She commands her aide to zoom into the footage, which reveals the film’s release date: October 5.

Over the last year, Netflix has released three separate teasers for the high-profile film, based on the book by Amar Bhushan. Speaking about the film in an interview with News18, the filmmaker had said, “I have changed the gender of the character for Tabu. I always find a reason to work with Tabu. Khufiya is a really special project for me. The entire team has worked very hard to create a suspenseful, slow-burning thriller, and with Netflix, we are thrilled to present the film to audiences globally.”

Vishal Bhardwaj has famously collaborated with Tabu on Haider and Maqbool. She also starred in his son Aasman Bhardwaj’s debut film, Kuttey. She said in an interview with PTI that the movie has turned out very well. “It’s thrilling, but different, like a classic Vishal film with his signature touch. We also have a fantastic ensemble cast, and it was so much fun collaborating with them. It is a personal film for all of us because we shot it quietly in Delhi, then in Canada. It’s a world that will, hopefully, pull you in,” she said.

The filmmaker has also worked quite frequently with Wamiqa Gabbi, who broke out with a prominent role in the Prime Video series Jubilee recently. She appeared in Vishal’s short film in the Modern Love Mumbai anthology, starred in another short for Apple, and also in his SonyLIV mystery series Charlie Chopra and the Mystery of Solang Valley.
