Gadar director Anil Sharma reveals Sunny Deol was not convinced with hand pump scene: ‘Shoot was halted for hours’
Gadar director Anil Sharma reveals how he went against everyone's will including Sunny Deol for the iconic hand pump scene in the film.

The 2001 film Gadar which starred Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel in the lead roles went on to become quite a hit. The film’s sequel Gadar 2 also went on to be quite successful commercially. Recently, in a conversation with Lallantop, the film’s director Anil Sharma shared how the iconic hand pump scene came into being. Anil also revealed that no one including Sunny Deol was initially convinced for that scene to be shot.
He said, “When I thought about the handpump scene, a lot of people including my writer, the producers, and even Sunny Deol were not convinced. They did not find it logical, the shoot had to be halted for a couple of hours to discuss and debate that this wouldn’t happen. I was convinced that it was doable, so I explained that my idea was to show the extreme steps one can take for love.”

The Gadar director further added, “The idea was that anyone who speaks ill about my country angers me so much that I can uproot a building, to show that impact and intensity in the anger, I wanted an element that could be torn from the ground, a tree or a fountain would be too big to execute, that’s when a hand pump came to my mind, because they were placed at frequent intervals in those days. During the discussion, I referred to an incident from Ramayana where Hanumanji gets the entire Gowardhan mountain to save Laxman’s life. So Tara Singh could at least do this, I had the conviction to portray his anger that way, and it worked.”
Gadar 2 was released in 2023 and the film went on to be a blockbuster. It was one of the highest grosser of the year and went on to collect around Rs 700 crores worldwide.
