When Anupam Kher got a lift from Shashi Kapoor, he prayed for their car to stop at every signal: ‘Wanted people to see me with him’

Anupam Kher recalled a story about Shashi Kapoor, when they were working together on the 1984 film Utsav. The film was released shortly after he had broken out with Saaransh.

Actor Anupam Kher recalled an interaction with the legendary Shashi Kapoor, when they worked together on the 1984 film Utsav. The film was released in the same year as Saaransh, which gave Anupam a break in the film industry. In an interview with The Lallantop, Anupam recalled how star-struck he was in Shashi Kapoor’s presence.

Towards the end of the interview, he was shown a photograph of himself in the film, and asked to comment about it. He said in Hindi, “I always say that I had a ‘running role’ in this film, because the whole time, I’m running after Shashi Kapoor. This was the first film I was cast in, although it was released after Saaransh. And I got to travel with Shashi Kapoor from Delhi to Bharatpur, because the car assigned to me didn’t turn up.”

Recalling the story, he continued, “Shashi Kapoor told me, ‘Main akela jaa raha hoon, tum aake baith jaao (I’m traveling alone, come with me).’ And I thought, ‘Wow, Shashi Kapoor!’ All I wanted was for the car to stop at every red light, so that people could see me with Shashi Kapoor. He fell asleep immediately. Even our changing room was the same.

Directed by Girish Karnad, Utsav was an erotic drama starring Rekha, Amjad Khan, Shekhar Suman and Shashi Kapoor himself. In a recent interview, Shekhar Suman recalled how he was cast in the film, and said that he happened to be visiting a set days after landing in Mumbai to pursue acting, and Shashi Kapoor was immediately struck by him. He was told to audition for Girish Karnad, and was shooting shortly afterwards.
