Amitabh Bachchan was going through a tough time when he worked with Mukul Anand in Dharma Productions’ Agneepath. While the film didn’t work at the box office at the time, over the years, it has developed a cult following. In a recent interview, Vikram Bhatt, who worked as director Mukul Anand’s associate director on the film, shared some anecdotes about the making of Agneepath and his memories of working with Bachchan. He also recalled when Amitabh jokingly “fired” him during the trial show of Agneepath.

In a chat with Radio Nasha, Vikram recalled that during a fight sequence in the film, Amitabh’s character was supposed to punch a man repeatedly. At this point, the actors standing next to him were required to stop him as the character he is punching is already dead. “There were three cameras rolling at the same time and at that time, the cameras used to be really loud but Amit ji was so involved in the shot that he accidentally abused in the shot. And Mukul okayed the shot,” he recalled and added, “The guys who were standing next to Amit ji, even they were shocked.”

Vikram said that Amitabh is a “decent, well spoken man” but since he was in the moment, he abused. When Vikram walked up to Mukul and told him about the same, Mukul assured that they could dub it later. Vikram said that after the shoot, they were required to host a trial show. “It used to happen with music and all. It’s easy to do it today but back then, it was really difficult,” he said and shared that Amitabh asked him to remove the part where he abused since his family was coming for the trial as well. “Amit ji called me and said ‘my family is coming, so you remove the part where I have abused’. But there was just so much work that I forgot,” he recalled with a laugh. Vikram said that as soon as that scene came on the screen, he remembered and heard Amitabh’s loud voice saying, “Vicky, you are fired.” “I apologised and he said ‘it’s okay’,” he said.

A few years later, Vikram worked with Amitabh in the 2004 film Aetbaar and said that when he worked with him again, he realised, “Working with Amit ji is like sitting in an automatic car, you don’t have to do anything. He is so perfect. He comes and stands on his mark, has learnt his dialogues, he is pitch perfect.”

Aetbaar also starred John Abraham and Bipasha Basu and was the only film that was produced by Ratan Tata’s company in Bollywood.
