A newborn girl was found dead inside a toilet at the Civil Hospital in Parasia town of Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara district, following which the police launched an investigation.

The incident came to light on Monday when a sanitation worker went to clean the women’s toilet and found it clogged. On closer inspection, hospital staff discovered the body of a newborn lodged inside. Police were immediately informed, and the body was retrieved following nearly eight hours of effort involving hospital staff, municipal workers and police personnel.

Confirming the incident, Parasia Block Medical Officer Dr Sudha Bakshi said the newborn’s body was noticed around noon and was finally extracted late in the evening in the presence of the police. “The possibility cannot be ruled out that a pregnant woman who came to the hospital during OPD hours delivered the baby in the toilet and attempted to dispose of the newborn to hide evidence,” she said.

The body has been sent for post-mortem examination. Police have begun scanning footage from all 26 CCTV cameras installed across the hospital premises. While there was no camera inside or immediately outside the toilet where the incident occurred, investigators are examining footage from corridors, galleries and entry/exit points to trace the movements of suspected individuals.

According to hospital records, at least 15 pregnant women visited the hospital for antenatal check-ups on Monday. Officials said 14 of them have been traced and verified.

A senior police officer said a case has been registered against unknown persons based on a complaint from the hospital authorities, and the investigation is ongoing. “We are trying to establish the identity of the woman and reconstruct the sequence of events,” he said.
