The 2025 edition of the Open House recorded close to 35,000 visitors, which was twice the footfall of the previous year (Image via IG/@iitmadrasofficial)The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has announced that it will open its research and innovation facilities to the public during the ‘Institute Open House 2026,’ scheduled between January 2 and 4, 2026. According to an official statement, the event aims to offer school and college students, teachers, researchers, industry professionals, and other visitors an opportunity to gain first-hand exposure to the institute’s academic and research ecosystem.
Registrations for the Open House 2026 can be completed online on the institute’s official website, and the institute has encouraged early sign-ups to facilitate planning and visitor management.

According to the statement, the event is expected to draw more than 95,000 registrants and up to 60,000 visitors over the three days.
The Open House will include access to over 100 laboratories across 18 academic departments, including four National Research Centres, 11 Institute Research Centres, and 15 Centres of Excellence. Visitors will be able to view ongoing research projects, student-led innovations, and demonstrations. Around 80 exhibition stalls will be set up to showcase faculty and student projects across various disciplines.

Attendees came from 250 cities across India, with 118 rural locations and nearly 250 areas outside Chennai represented. The event website also recorded more than 20,000 visits.

The institute noted that over 200 student and staff volunteers were involved in making last year’s event possible. They collectively contributed more than 4,000 hours and travelled over 1,000 kilometres for outreach activities.
The Open House is being organised under the institute’s ‘Annaivarakum IITM’ (IIT Madras for All) initiative, which aims to make the academic and research environment accessible to a broad audience. Through this initiative, the institute seeks to build stronger public engagement and introduce students and visitors to ongoing developments in science, engineering, and technology.
The institute has invited registrations from the public, with the last date to sign up being 5 December 2025.
