‘Unwired Pune’ stalled; civic body, pvt firm yet to resolve issues

It was in April,2007,that the Pune Municipal Corporation launched the ambitious ‘Unwiring Pune’ project that was to make the city the first in the country to offer wireless Internet connectivity.

It was in April,2007,that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) launched the ambitious ‘Unwiring Pune’ project that was to make the city the first in the country to offer wireless Internet connectivity. However, the project is virtually non-existent today with operations under suspension for the last six months. Reason: The private company executing the project is awaiting government support to make the project feasible.

The civic body has attributed the delay in completing the project to the need for further security clearances. “The pilot project of Unwire Pune was successful and continued for one year as per the agreement with the PMC. It is not operational now due to various problems in implementing it across the city. The project has been kept on hold for the time being,” said Sujit Singh,vice-president of Chennai-based Microsense Private Limited, the company entrusted with making the entire city unwired.

The civic body has to take further steps to ensure its continuance,he said, adding,“The project has not been officially called off. We are hopeful that all the outstanding issues will be resolved soon.”

PMC Deputy Municipal Commissioner Virendra Jadhavrao said the civic body had to ask the private company to suspend operations for security reasons after the Mumbai attack on November 26 last year. “It was up to the private company to get relevant clearances and licences to execute the Unwire Pune project,” he said, adding that the civic body was prepared to discuss and resolve other issues.

However,Singh said the project can be feasible only if the government departments started using it to execute various online programmes. “The government has to play the anchor role for making it successful and the online facilities of various departments should be executed using this facility,” he added.

The project has also been facing technical problems due to erratic power supply which has hampered the installation of electronic equipment for the pilot project. The company has been seeking permission to use private properties for installing the antennae for the project but that has not happened,Singh said.
