As the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, completes 80 years, has organised a 15-day long event will celebrate its musical legacy.
When it was formed in the year 1932,by the late Pandit Vishnu Pulaskar the ideology behind the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya was simple- to make music which was accessible to everyone. Eighty years hence, the founding principle still finds a strong foothold in its vast network of alumni who practice the art across the country.
The last two days of the event will feature a performance by Salil Kulkarni and a devotional song programme called Bhajan Sandhya, which will feature 10 different groups of women artistes. Marathe informs,All the women in the event are senior citizens who have formed these groups and sing bhajans. The 15-day event is also being webcast so that people across the globe can watch it.
Several music students, representing various genres of music, will be a part of the celebrations. Right from bhakti sangeet to natya sangeet and from film music to western classical they are all being showcased, says Marathe,All the artistes performing are established artistes. Most of them are a part of our alumni. The best part is all of them have come to perform here to pay respect to their teachers or to the institute.
The programme has been done for a budget of Rs nine lakhs. All the artistes are performing for no remuneration. The cost would have gone up to Rs 25 lakhs had they charged us. In fact this year all the money that we are generating will go for the expansion of the institute. The money generated from the proceeds,Marathe informs, will be used to generate more money for a trust that has been set up by the institute to help artistes, teachers and people who make and repair the musical instruments. He adds,Till now we have around Rs three lakhs and by the next financial year we will have double the amount. In addition we are setting up new branches of the Mahavidyalaya in the talukas of Daund,Baramati and the district of Phaltan.
For the last couple of years the institute has been conducting theme-based musical events round the academic year. In 2010 the theme was sanwaad sangeet. It was about generating conversations through music. Last year we had the theme of rare raagas where we played all rare raagas that have been forgotten from the mainstream musical scene in India, says Marathe.
