The economic slowdown will play a key role in Shirur constituency, having cut down the number of voters. Around 60,000 workers in Bhosari,Talawade and Chikhali have migrated to other places.
Most of Punes industrial area is under Shirur and economy is a key issue for both the main candidates, though it is not clear who will benefit from the migration.
Political analysts say the NCP stands to suffer as it has a strong base in the area. The NCP has a hold on most of the workers unions and small and medium organisations. But many workers have migrated, said an analyst.
NCP candidate Vilas Lande,a businessman, arranged a meeting of representatives of small and medium units three months ago with Sharad Pawar, who promised to look into the issue personally. Lande was not available for comment, despite repeated attempts.
Shiv Sena candidate Ahivajirao Adhalrao-Patil,also a businessman, said recession was the big issue. I have suggested a few solutions. Chakan,Bhosari and Shirur area are worst hit and I will push for an industrial package for these areas, he said.
According to estimates,60 per cent of the temporary workers dependent on small industries are without jobs. Around 4,500 small-scale units in Bhosari,Pimpri-Chinchwad,Chakan and Ranjangaon are dependent directly or indirectly on the auto industry. The total permanent workforce is around 6 lakh,of which around one lakh have lost their jobs, said Anant Sardeshmukh, director general of Maratha Chamber of Commerce,Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA).
Voting will be affected by the migration of workers. During MNS campaign against North Indians around 10 per cent of the North Indian workers who had registered as voters in this constituency left, said Suresh Mhetre of Association of Small and Medium Scale Industries.
