ACB arrests sub-inspector for graft

The state anti-corruption bureau (ACB) on Saturday arrested an assistant sub-inspector posted at the Bharati Vidyapeeth police station for allegedly accepting Rs 2,000 as bribe from a scrap dealer.

The state anti-corruption bureau (ACB) on Saturday arrested an assistant sub-inspector posted at the Bharati Vidyapeeth police station for allegedly accepting Rs 2,000 as bribe from a scrap dealer. ACB said the officer had earlier accepted Rs 23,000 from the dealer.

The arrested officer is Vazir Hussain Shaikh (54). ACB initiated a probe against him after Sanjeev Khandale,a scrap dealer approached them with a complaint.

“A few days ago,Shaikh had nabbed Khandale for his role in a case of purchase of stolen scrap material. He also reportedly threatened Khandale that he will register a case against him.” ACP Rajendra Galande said.

Galande said,“Shaikh demanded Rs 50,000 from Khandale for not registering a complaint against him. After negotiation Shaikh agreed on Rs 25,000. Initially Khadale paid him Rs 23,000 after which he lodged a complaint with the ACB. Shaikh had asked him to come to Katraj police chowky to pay the remaining amount.”

A trap was laid by the ACB on Saturday and Shaikh was arrested red handed while accepting Rs 2,000. Shaikh has been booked under sections of Prevention of Corruption Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

The investigating team comprised of inspectors Prakash Shinde and Vaishali Galande. Bharati Vidyapeeth police station is investigating the case further.
