THE Railway Protection Force (RPF) will install under-vehicle search system (UVSS) at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus by January next year.
The system will scan vehicles for explosives. The device, which will be placed under the road surface at the entry or exit gates to get a real-time image scan of the vehicle from underneath. Motorists will only be required to slow down briefly while the vehicles pass over the UVSS device.
The new-age surveillance system will help security personnel check vehicles in a more successful manner unlike the current mirror in a stick equipment, which only gives a partial view of the under-frame of vehicles.
The UVSS device will scan the image of the chassis and with the help of an automatic number plate recognition technique, relay the information to a central monitoring computer.
Unlike the mirror on a stick technique, the UVSS will record the information about a scanned vehicle and point out the difference in the under-frame of the vehicle the next time it passes over the equipment placed below the road surface. The system will also ensure safety of the security personnel who would not be required to physically check a vehicle.
Alok Bohra, senior divisional security commissioner,RPF,Central Railway (CR),said,The device is part of the integrated
security system (ISS),which is being implemented across railway stations.
The UVSS will be first implemented at CST and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, which see heavy passenger traffic daily and later extended to other stations.
As part of ISS,RPF has improved security infrastructure at stations by providing improved CCTV cameras, door metal frame detectors,hand-held metal detectors and luggage scanners.
