Navi mumbai: Half of townships voters turn out for civic polls; Cong,NCP supporters clash,lathi-charged

Of the Navi Mumbai electorate turned out for the Municipal Corporation on Sunday,according to provisional figures released by the State Election Commission. The total electorate is 6.29 lakh; voting took place at 639 centres. The turnout marked a slight drop from the 54 per cent in the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.
CLASH:
Supporters of the Congress and the NCP,which are contesting separately,clashed following allegations of bogus voting at ward number 55,where two-time Congress corporator Dashrat Bhagat is contesting. Police lathi-charged agitators and arrested 33 persons for stone-pelting and alleged bogus voting. The police intervened and brought the situation under control. It was between 11.30 and noon that the lathi-charge took place, said Navi Mumbai police commissioner Gulabrao Pol. The State Election Commission,however,said voting was overall peaceful.
