Even as several laws and acts have been formulated to arrest the menace of sex-selective abortions,to explore their validity a consultative conference with the leading legal fraternity started here today. Several lawyers participated in the event organised by Divya Jyoti Jagrati Sansthan,under its gender-equality program,Santulan. In the flagship of the sensitization and awareness campaign against the issue,the conference was moderated by a disciple of Shri Ashutosh Maharaj,Deepika Sehgal.
Discussing about the implementation of pre-conception and pre-natal diagnostic techniques act for the prohibition of sex-selection,Sehgal,said,Police and other state agencies have a great responsibility in ensuring an effective implementation of such acts. Still,cases of sex-selective abortions are not registered. Out of 92 such cases registered across India in 2009,only two convictions have been done,out of which one was in Punjab.
