Cop accused in BJP leader’s murder case sent to jail

Muzaffarnagar: A local court here sent a police constable who was dismissed for his alleged involvement in the murder of a local BJP leader to judicial custody on Saturday. The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate,P N Pandey sent Naresh,who was absconding since the murder and surrendered on Friday,to the jail. Rajkumar,a local Bharatiya Janata Party leader,was shot dead allegedly by Naresh and his nephew Vipul,in Kakroli area of the district,on October 24,2007. Naresh,who was also involved in several cases in Punjab,Delhi and UP,was carrying a reward of Rs 30,000,police said.

Malkiat Singh is new UPPSC chairman

Lucknow: Special Director General of Police Malkiat Singh has been appointed the new chairman of UP State Public Service Commission by the state government here. Singh,a 1977 batch IPS officer,has been appointed in place of former IAS officer S R Lakha,whose term expired on Friday. Singh,who was due to retire on March 31,has taken voluntary retirement.

Nationalism concept changing: Ansari

LUCKNOW: Vice President Hamid Ansari,was the chief guest at the 93rd convocation ceremony of the Banaras Hindu University,held in Varanasi on Saturday. Ansari,in his convocation address,said the concept of sovereignty was changing in view of the global transitions. The Vice-Chancellor of BHU,Prof DP Singh,in his address,said the university has taken a number of steps towards international cooperation in education. He said that more than 500 students from other countries are pursuing education in the BHU. Singh also said the university has set up the UNESCO chair for peace and inter-culture — the first in South Asia. BHU Chancellor Karan Singh and state Health Minister Anant Mishra were also present during the convocation. A total of 26 students were awarded medals by the Chancellor for academic excellence,whereas 364 students were awarded PhD while 2505 students post-graduate and 4207 students graduate degrees during the convocation.

Shopkeeper shot at over land dispute

LUCKNOW: A shopkeeper ,Mohammad Junaid Siddiqui ,was shot and injured when he entered into an argument with two persons over encroachment of land in Lucknow’s Ghazipur area on Saturday. According to police,two persons — Mousleen and Afsar — argued with Mohammad Junaid Siddiqui,when a car carrying children hit a divider at Ghazipur crossing. The duo blamed Junaid for encroaching the land which led to the accident. “The gun has been seized,” said ASP,Trans-Gomti,Nitin Tiwari. Junaid in his complaint stated that the accused had opened fire on him in an attempt to loot.
