With Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhis Jan Sampark Abhiyaan set to start from Phulpur on November 14,the party is likely to announce its third list of candidates for the UP Assembly polls only after that. Earlier, the party had indicated that the third list of around 60 candidates may be announced around Diwali.
Party sources said that the focus now is primarily on ensuring that the inaugural function of the Jan Sampark Abhiyaan is a grand success. This is going to be completely Rahuls show and all efforts are being taken to ensure that it not only passes off smoothly but a strong and positive message reaches the people, said a source. Therefore, for now the party does not want any disgruntled element to shift the focus or affect the campaign. For this reason, the party would hold on to the third list till at least after November 14,sources added.
The third list includes seats from districts like Lucknow,Pratapgarh,Kanpur,Varanasi,Kaushambi and Fatehpur. The left out seats from western UP too were supposed to be announced following the pre-poll pact with Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD).
Sources further added that even the pre-poll pact between the Congress and the RLD may also be formally announced only after November 14. They, however, added that there were no hiccups regarding the alliance. The RLD was reportedly interested in getting one more person accommodated at the Centre as a minister of state, besides its chief Ajit Singh getting a Cabinet berth. However, the party has been convinced to stay put with the current offer of Singhs ministership and around 50 seats in the state Assembly polls, sources said.
The seriousness with which the Phulpur event is being taken can be gauged from the fact that the state Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi held a meeting at her residence just a day after Diwali, that is normally a holiday all across, amid presence of top state leaders on Thursday. Accompanied by other leaders and supporters, she also visited the site in Phulpur where the function will be held. While she left for Lucknow after that, sources maintained that she would return and may even camp for more than a week to oversee the preparations for the Phulpur function.
