Chief Minister Mayawati has shot off one more letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. In the latest letter she has expressed concern over the proposed new parameters for the assessment of poverty line. It is impossible for a poor person to make both ends meet with Rs 32 in urban area and Rs 26 in rural area, she wrote and urged Singh to increase the limit.
Stating that it was always challenging to fix the poverty level, she wrote: The aim of this process must not be projection of an artificial picture. It seems 2,100 calories per person a day in urban areas and 2,499 calories per person a day in rural areas are reduced considerably, though new assessment like health, education and footwear have been included, her letter read.
These are such families which remain outside Public Distribution System and they are not getting benefit. This is because of the wrong assessment of poverty indicators, she added.
She further wrote that it was necessary for the Central government to take steps so that the number of poor gets reduced to half of its present population by the year 2015 as per the goal of Millennium Development programme.
