Cong too loses its KMC face

It was in Lebutolla Park in ward 51 where Union Finance Minister and West Bengal Pradesh Congress chief Pranab Mukherjee held his first public meeting in the run up for the crucial municipal polls to campaign for party strongman Pradip Ghosh and his daughter-in-law Tania Ghosh.

Bustling with activity that day,the park wore a deserted look on Wednesday for an obvious reason: After 25 years, the Congress has lost its stronghold to Trinamool.

Trinamool dealt a twin blow by defeating Pradip Ghosh in ward 51 and Tania Ghosh ward 50 in north Kolkata. Two new entrants in the Trinamool defeated the Congress strongman and his daughter-in-law. Mousumi Dey,a young Trinamool candidate defeated Pradip by a margin of 760 votes while Sanchita Mondol defeated Tania by a margin of 313 votes.

Leader of the Opposition in Kolkata Municipal Corporation for years,Pradip was one of those who opposed the Congress-Trinamool alliance.

“What can I say? I still cannot believe it. It is the people’s verdict and my family accepts it,” said Sajal Ghosh, son of Pradip and husband of Tania.

Even as Pradip avoided the media throughout the day,the Ghosh residence in Lebutolla Park reflected a sorry sight. Beside the house on a narrow lane stood Pradip and his daughter-in-law’s election camp office. Some parked motorbikes and a group of youths squatting on plastic chairs was all that was there today.

“We have not evaluated what went wrong. For the past 25 years,my father has worked for the people of this ward and north Kolkata,” added Sajal.

Pradip Ghosh had ruled the Ward 50 for 25-odd years. This time the ward was reserved for female candidates and Pradip fielded Tania as a candidate, and decided to contest from ward 51.

Interestingly, both the wards was in focus as both Congress and Trinamool took it up as a challenge to win the ward. Mamata Banerjee had held public meetings in the area to campaign for her candidates.

“This is all because of the wave of change, which people in Bengal want. This is all because of Mamata Banerjee, who trusted me. The people of north Kolkata have blessed me,” said a smiling Mousumi Dey.
