Farheena Naseem was in for a big surprise when the CBSE Class XII results were announced on Monday morning. With 84 per cent, she had scored the maximum marks in her school – the Rajkiya Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya.
The Humanities student thinks her good performance is the only way she can get her family out of poverty. Stating that her father is a chai-wallah at Chandi Chowk, she says,Khush toh bohat hai. Ammi aur Abu bohat khush hai aaj (I am happy. My mother and father are also happy today).
Getting those marks, however, was no easy task for her. She had no books for most part of the year, and the school was struggling with various issues, including lack of teachers and infrastructure. With Urdu medium schools across the city still grappling with issues such as lack of infrastructure, teachers and books, students like Farheena were the worst sufferers. But,despite the hardships, she had done well.
However,overall,Urdu-medium schools across the city registered a slight dip in their pass percentage in the CBSE Class XII examinations. While the pass percentage of Urdu medium schools in the Capital was recorded at 81 per cent last year,it has fallen to 79.15 per cent in this one. This pertains to government-run schools as well as aided schools in the city.
However,a few Urdu medium schools have registered 100 per cent pass percentage this year. Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya,Jama Masjid,Number-1,is one such institution.
Zakir Hussain Memorial School in Jaffrabad also registered 100 per cent pass percentage. There were others, however, that did not do as well. The Shafiq Memorial Senior Secondary School at Bara Hindu Rao,achieved a 76 per cent pass percentage this year as against 79 in the previous one. The Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya at Pataudi House got 86 per cent against 99 in 2010. The Hakeem Ajmal Khan Memorial Girls Senior Secondary School at Daryaganj also registered a dip at 90 from 94 per cent while the Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya,Jama Masjid Number-2,managed 98.5 per cent as compared to the perfect 100 it had made last year.
Urdu medium school results will improve only if the NCERT translates the Urdu medium texts on time, and fills up all the vacant teacher posts, said Firoz Bhakt of Friends for Education,an NGO.
Meanwhile,an Urdu medium school, the Fatehpuri Muslim School at Chandni Chowk, managed to hike its pass percentage to 75,from 68 last year. The Anglo-Arabic School has registered a pass percentage of 63 per cent, from 45 in 2010. SKV,Jaffrabad,on the other hand, managed to register 98 per cent, from last years 90.
