Motorists obstructing the way of emergency vehicles will be fined Rs 2,000 apart from facing legal action, according to the Delhi Traffic police. Also, the extreme right lane, on roads having three or more lanes, will be used by emergency vehicles while they are attending to a call.

While a notification in this regard was issued by the Traffic police in September last year, Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Muktesh Chander said not a single complaint in this regard has been received by the department till date.

According to the notification, emergency response vehicles — ambulances, PCR vans and fire tenders — will have the overriding right of way over all motorised traffic when using the extreme right hand lane in emergency situations. All other categories of vehicles shall vacate the extreme right lane by moving to the left of the road/street, it says.

“We had written to the Union and state health departments in September to sensitise the drivers/operators of these emergency vehicles about the said notification. We will now write to all the hospitals about the decision. Errant motorists will be fined Rs 2,000 and they will also face legal action,” Chander said.

Hospitals can lodge complaints against erring motorists with evidence in the form of photo or videos, along with the vehicle number so that action can be taken, he said.
