Who let the sex talk out? This was the topic that brought four popular fiction writers together at the India Habitat Centre on Friday as a part of the Penguin Spring Fever 2012. In the session titled Kiss and Tell, authors like Ravinder Singh shared space with Nistula Hebbar,Chanchaldeep Singh Sandhu and Madhuri Banerjee to highlight how sex outside the conjugal bedroom was filling up pages of new novels.
The younger generation of today is frank and open about their sexual conquests they treat it like a test-drive before actually buying the vehicle. It is for this generation that we write, and it is this generation that reads our books, said Ravinder Singh, author of the bestselling book,Can Love Happen Twice?
Moderated by RJ Sachin of Red FM,the session swung from debates about the writings of eminent author Khushwant Singh,to the Swinging Seventies to an age-old question does sex sell? Sex is easy to sell, but very hard to write. There is a very thin line between vulgar and sensual, and that is very hard to maintain, said Nistula Hebbar,a journalist with The Financial Express and author of a new book,Kiss and Tell.
Chanchaldeep Singh Sandhu, who wrote I Never Thought I Could Fall in Love, agreed. Khushwant Singh is the original sensual writer in India. Even now, when I get stuck while writing a sensual scene,I pick up The Company of Women and it inspires me every single time.
The audience, comprising students, readers, fans, and friends of the authors, were active participants in the discussion with their questions and arguments. Spotted making a blink-and-you-miss-it appearance was young BJP politician Anurag Thakur, who bought three copies of Kiss and Tell. The evening ended with a performance by the indie rock band Vedas and a book signing session by the authors.
