Just Thrill

Abbas-Mustan want to continue with their USP of entertaining audiences with thrillers

For almost two decades, the director duo of Abbas-Mustan has been synonymous with the thriller genre in Bollywood. And they are happy about it. The genre gives them “a chance to challenge themselves every time and add new twists and turns”. This time they are doing so with their most

expensive film to date,Players.

A remake of the Hollywood classic The Italian Job,Players was offered to the duo by Viacom 18,the sister concern of Paramount Pictures, which made the original. While the central theme of a gold heist,double-crossing and chase sequences in mini-coopers has been retained, newer flavours have been added to the franchise. “We have added a lot of entertainment quotient to the film with new twists, dance numbers and some romance thrown in for good measure,” says Mustan. Players has Abhishek Bachchan,Bipasha Basu,Sonam Kapoor,Bobby Deol and Neil Nitin Mukesh. It comes almost three-and-a-half years after the duo’s last film,Race (2008). “It took us more than a year in pre-production because of the sleek action-and-chase

sequences. We also had to seek permission from various authorities where the film was shot,” says Abbas, pointing out that in New Zealand, where they shot scenes of traffic jams, permission was sought almost six months in advance.

Soon after the release of Players in January, the duo will move on to Race 2,their first sequel film. “We have

Bipasha Basu,Saif Ali Khan and Anil Kapoor from the first film. While their story continues,John Abraham is a new addition to the list,” says Mustan. Abbas also expresses interest in making a sequel to Humraaz. “Finding an appropriate script is difficult, but the hunt is on,” he says.
