Train,air services affected,too

Rail services were disrupted for the second day on Wednesday with the cancellation or rescheduling of 60 trains that included three Shatabdi trains from Chandigarh and Amritsar.

Rail services were disrupted for the second day on Wednesday with the cancellation or rescheduling of 60 trains that included three Shatabdi trains from Chandigarh and Amritsar. Railway authorities, meanwhile, expressed hope that the situation would return to normal by Thursday morning. Airline services were also partially affected as several flights were delayed.

At Ambala junction, the train yard and tracks remained waterlogged. This resulted in the cancellation of as many as 20 trains, much to the inconvenience of passengers. The major trains that were affected included the morning New Delhi-Kalka Shatabdi Express and its subsequent pair,Kalka-New Delhi Shatabdi Express that starts from Chandigarh at 6.23 pm. The Amritsar-New Delhi Shatabdi Express, which starts at 5.10 am from Amritsar, was also cancelled.

The other trains which were cancelled or diverted included the Lucknow-Chandigarh Sadbhawna Express,Unchahar Express running between Chandigarh and Allahabad,Kalka-Mumbai-Paschim Link Express and New Delhi-Chandigarh Himalayan Queen.

There were also several delays: the Kalka-New Delhi Shatabdi Express scheduled for departure from Chandigarh at 6.53 am,departed at 8.30 am; the Una-Chandigarh-New Delhi Jan Shatabdi Express was also delayed by around an hour. The railways also cancelled four passenger trains on the Ambala-Saharanpur,Ambala-Kurukshetra and Ambala Chandigarh- Nangal routes.

As per the railway officials at Ambala cantonment junction— a major junction connecting trains to Delhi,Saharanpur,Chandigarh,Ludhiana,Amritsar and Jammu— the water-level at the tracks and yard is receding and operations would resume normally by Wednesday morning,if it does not rain.

Though signals once again functioned in the evening, railway authorities said that water is being pumped out of the tracks. “The waterlogging is towards Delhi end, which would be cleared by night. All train operations from Ambala Cantonment junction would be restored by early morning tomorrow,” said G M Singh,Senior Divisional Commercial Manager,Ambala Division.

Even though no flight was cancelled, the ones that operated were delayed from Chandigarh due to flooding in Mumbai and other areas from where these flights arrived. Almost all the flights were delayed by 45 minutes to one hour.

The airport officials said that although the situation at the Chandigarh airport was normal on Wednesday, the delay in flights was due to delay in departures from Mumbai. The accessibility to the airport terminal, which was badly affected on Tuesday due to flooding, was restored on Wednesday. The situation is expected to return to normal by Thursday.
