The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) Saturday declared its support to the wrestlers who are currently protesting at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.

The wrestlers have been protesting since April 23 demanding the arrest of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accused of sexually harassing seven female wrestlers, including a minor.

SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami emphasized the need for the government to take the issue seriously and ensure justice for the athletes, who are fighting for their rights and the honour of girls. “The Sikh community stands with these sportswomen and their struggle, representing the rich history, customs, and traditions of Sikhism. A delegation from the SGPC will soon visit Delhi to meet with the protesting athletes,” he said.

Several other significant decisions were taken in the executive committee meeting. Dhami announced that the SGPC will take strict legal action against individuals and social media accounts spreading anti-Sikh narratives and hate speech. “Numerous complaints have already been filed by the SGPC against such accounts, and evidence will be presented to the Government of India. If necessary action is not taken, the matter will be escalated to the court,” he said.

Dhami also expressed concern over incidents of beadbi (sacrilege) and violation of maryada (conduct) in Gurdwara Sahibs in Punjab. He criticized the Punjab government for not addressing these issues seriously and called for the enactment of strict laws and timely punishment for those who hurt religious sentiments. The SGPC EC has decided to raise this matter with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. He appealed to Gurdwara management committees and the Sangat to remain vigilant within the Gurdwaras at all times.

Furthermore, the SGPC formed committees to address ongoing matters related to Gurdwara Guru Dongmar Sahib, Sikkim, and Gurdwara Tapasthan Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Mechuka, Arunachal Pradesh. “These committees will engage in discussions with the respective governments, and since both cases involve Buddhists, they will also meet with the Dalai Lama,” said SGPC president.

Regarding the demand of release of Sikh prisoners, the SGPC has collected around 26 lakh forms, which will be sent to the President of India through the Governor of Punjab. A meeting with the President has been requested to discuss Sikh community issues. To ensure security, measures have been taken near Sri Darbar Sahib, and other necessary arrangements are being made.
