Robbery case: Court acquits four

All the four highway robbers- accused of committing major robberies in the Tricity- were acquitted by the court of Judicial Magistrate Sunil Kumar here today.

All the four highway robbers- accused of committing major robberies in the Tricity- were acquitted by the court of Judicial Magistrate Sunil Kumar here today. The court acquitted — Jai Pal Singh,Harinder Singh,Gurshahid Singh Pawar and Harpreet Singh — who were allegedly involved in highway robberies. The police will now file an appeal against the verdict,sources said.

The four arrested were allegedly members of an inter-state gang of highway robbers operating in Chandigarh,Punjab,Haryana and Delhi,who were arrested last year after following a tip-off.

It was informed that four people involved in a shop robbery in Ludhiana were coming to Chandigarh along with arms and looted cash and that they were planning a similar robbery in Chandigarh too.

The police had put up a naka on October 30,2009 near a police check-post in Sector 42,where the accused were arrested after their white Maruti Swift car with a Punjab registration number,was intercepted by the police. The police recovered four revolvers,25 live cartridges and Rs 4,64,000 from them.

The accused have been booked under Sections 25,54 and 59 of the Arms Act. The Police registered a FIR against them under Sections 401 (for belonging to a gang of robbers),420 (cheating),467 (forgery of valuable security),468 (forgery for cheating),471 (using a forged document as genuine),473 (possessing counterfeit seal) of the IPC.

The accused were involved in a robbery at a gun house in Hoshiarpur in Punjab in April 2009.

Three members of this gang had been arrested by the Haryana police on June 5,2009 and 85 weapons,large amounts of ammunition and two luxury cars were recovered from them,said a police source.

The court ruled that the prosecution was not able to establish the case as there were loopholes in it.
