Driver gets 2-year jail for fatal accident
A lower Court on Wednesday awarded two years imprisonment to Kharar resident Gurjit Singh in connection with the death of journalist Simmi Marwaha in 2003. It also slapped a Rs 10,000 penalty. Gurjit has been held guilty on charges of rash and negligent driving under Sections 279 and 304 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). As per the prosecution,Marwaha was on her way to office on her Kinetic. When she approached the Sector 43 roundabout,a rashly driven bus hit her vehicle from behind and she died.
Ex-SOPU president held for attack outside court
Former Student Organisation of Punjab University (SOPU) president Barinder Dhillon has been arrested by Chandigarh Police in a five-month-old case of attempt to murder. Dhillon and his associates had allegedly attacked student leader Narinder Singh Gujjar outside the District Court,Sector 17,on February 15,earlier this year. Gujjar was critically injured and was admitted to PGI from where he was discharged two days later. A case was registered against Dhillon on charges of attempt to murder at the Sector 17 police station.
