Gurukul bags first prize in debate
Panchkula: On the first day of an inter-school competition – Fanta Fiesta,2011,the Gurukul,Sector 20,Panchkula won the debate competition. A total of 31 teams,from Chandigarh,Panchkula,Mohali,Rajpura,Pinjore and Ambala participated in the competition,which was held at Satluj Public School,Sector 4,Panchkula. In the collage making competitions,a total of 35 teams participated. The results of the collage making competition will be declared tomorrow. The teams made colourful collages using coke and its products as raw materials. The topic for todays debate was Should social networking sites such as Facebook,Twitter and Orkut be allowed in school libraries. Strong views from the participants,both for and against the motion,were received during the debate competition. While the team of The Gurukul,Sector 20,Panchkula bagged the first prize; Delhi Public School,Sector 40,Chandigarh was the first runner up and Lawrence Public School,Mohali was the second runner up in the debate competition. The speakers of Saupins School,Panchkula and Manav Mangal Smart School,Mohali were given special prizes.
Talk on ill effects of drugs held at PU
Chandigarh: The Drug de-addiction Society of Post Graduate Government College for Girls,Sector11 organised a talk on Drug use and abuse today. Dr Devender Rana,clinical psychologist from the Department of Psychiatry,PGIMER was the resource-person on the occasion. Achila Dogra,Principal of the college discussed the dire need to educate the students about the ill effects of drugs on physical and mental health,with the resource person and the faculty of the Drug De-Addiction Society. Dr Rana highlighted the medical aspects and consequences of drug abuse. He discussed the dependency needs and withdrawal symptoms of the addicts. Many queries,inhibitions and fears have to be addressed to benefit from the expert of the field. Many students asked pertinent questions regarding assistance to a victim,as well as about preventive measures. The interactive session along with the talk proved to be informative and thought provoking for the students and faculty.
