Almost two years after he was suspended from the Punjab Assembly, former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh returned to the House.

Almost two years after he was suspended from the Punjab Assembly, former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh returned to the House on Wednesday,in style. He was recently reinstated by the Supreme Court.

Sources said around 1.20 pm,Amarinder entered the Assembly along with more than a dozen former ministers and MLAs and was received by over double that number of sitting Congress MLAs. A few Congress MLAs who were attending a Congress Legislature Party meeting in the party office in the Assembly, came out to receive Amarinder when they came to know he was there.

Interestingly,Leader of opposition Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, who chaired the CLP meeting, did not come out to receive him. Amarinder attended the CLP meeting later. After the meeting, all the MLAs,including Amarinder and Bhattal, went to the house. Many Congress leaders, including former MPs,MLAs and ministers such as Rana Gurjit,Ashwani Sekri,Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa,Arvind Khanna,Surinder Singla,Gurkirat Singh,Harnamdas Johar,Vijay Sathi,Hira Sodhi,Major Amardeep OSD of Amarinder,Karanbir Sekhon were present in the speakers’ gallery.

In the visitors’ gallery, former ministers Hans Raj Joshan,Chaudhary Jagjit and Brig Bhupinder Singh Lally were present. In his first speech after his return,Amarinder demanded that the monsoon session be extended. “I want to request to you (Speaker) that this monsoon session should be extended as just legislative business has been taken care of. There is no time for debate on very vital issues of the state’s economy, the high unemployment and the deteriorating law and order situation.”
