Open spaces act as venues for fashion shows and exhibitions
The nip in the air might make you want to snuggle indoors, but there can be nothing better than to be out under the sun to warm up the winters. While enthusiasts will tell you that a picnic in the park is a perfect way to spend the weekend, the increasing number of events and parties taking place outdoors are also an indicator of the growing popularity of open spaces. Weddings in lawns are common now,but it is time for fashion shows, exhibitions and workshops to follow suit. Held indoors last year, the management of Chandigarh Fashion Week preferred to organise the event by the poolside at Hotel Mountview,Sector 10,this year. The line-up included an open-air exhibition. We timed the shows in the afternoon so that more people could view the exhibition at leisure, before attending the fashion shows, says JS Jatana, president,Chandigarh Fashion Council.
For a cup of tea over a casual discussion on art or politics, head to the lawns of Cafe Kaffee Kuchh at Lajpat Rai Bhawan,Sector 15. Last month, the place acted as the venue for the Garage Film Festival. We saw the movie sitting outside, like a drive-in,and it was a fantastic experience. The idea of meeting out in the open gives a sense of space, freedom and works logistically well too, says Sukhmani Chani, the brain behind the Cafe. Coming Sunday,he has organised a Singles Cafe, where there would be a discussion on relationships.
The sports enthusiasts in the city also got to try their hand at Petanque,in an event held at Alliance Francaise,Sector 36. Similar to British lawn bowling, the game popular in France,is played with metal balls. It was fun,as we seldom get to play anything outside, said one of the participants. Leisure Valley in Sector 10,meanwhile,is acting as the venue for Pancham Prashars kick-boxing classes. Its a unique experience to workout in the open, while breathing in fresh air. The grass acts as cushioning and one feels more energised, says Pancham, who is an IT expert and a certified trainer in martial arts.
Being in the open could also lead one to think better according to the members of FyvElementz,a group of students who have kick-started weekly activities for children in several parks in Chandigarh every Sunday. The project called Brain Train, comprises various brain teasers that encourage one to think in an unconventional manner. We believe that human brain can be trained, all it needs is proper guidance, says Abhimanyu,a member of the group.
