TThe five Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers of Ahmedabad unit, who were arrested for putting up posters against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the city, were taken in judicial custody Sunday, after Ahmedabad metropolitan court magistrate asked for the hearing to be done in a regular court on Monday.

“They were produced in a special court by the Narol police station officials, but the magistrate asked for the hearing to be done in a regular court on Monday for bail. They were sent to judicial custody at Sabarmati Central jail,” said advocate Nagendra Mishra at the Ahmedabad district court and president of the legal cell of the party’s Ahmedabad AAP unit.

Mishra also informed that the Vatva police have applied for a transfer warrant to take them under their custody.

“They will be taking them under their custody on Sunday evening. The party workers will be then produced in the court for both the cases filed in Narol and Vatva police stations respectively on Monday in the metropolitan magistrate court (Gheekanta) in Ahmedabad,” added Mishra.

The five AAP workers —Natwar Thakor, Jatin Patel, Kuldeep Bhatt, Bipin Sharma, Ajay Chauhan — were booked in six FIRs across four police stations, Isanpur (three FIRs), Vatva, Maninagar, and Narol, under Sections 120 B (criminal conspiracy), 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of the Indian Penal Code and various sections of the Press and Registration of Books Act and Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.

They were given bail in all the three cases filed at the Isanpur police stations, in one case on Friday, and in the remaining two on Saturday.

The Narol police arrested them outside the Gheekanta metropolitan court after their bail, on Saturday.

Arvind Chauhan and Jeevan Maheshwari, also the party workers from Ahmedabad arrested by the Vadaj police Thursday, were given bail on Friday by the metropolitan court.

Party worker Paresh Tulsiyani, who was arrested by the airport police on Thursday, was granted bail Friday at the police station itself.

The eight workers were arrested Thursday, by the Ahmedabad police for allegedly putting up posters across the city as part of its countrywide “Modi hatao, desh bachao” (Remove Modi, save the country) campaign against Modi.

The FIRs mentioned that these persons were booked as they “have done an act that is illegal, a premeditated conspiracy, and damaged the public property for private use and altered the original appearance of that property.
