PDA may replace Blackberry as Ahmedabad traffic cops emulate Hyderabad model

The PDAs will have mobile thermal printers installed within,which will help the officers immediately print and issue tickets to the offenders. It will be “sturdier,handy and better” in technology and function twice the speed of Blackberry,he added.

Also,it will be equipped with SMS facility with which the offenders across the state would be notified about their offences.

“These PDAs would be different from the usual PDA phones commonly used as smart phones by many for personal or official use. The sets will also have features like GPS-enabled navigation. It will operate from one common network connecting the traffic police across the city,” Anarwala said.

The move come close on the heels of the introduction of Blackberry phones to manage traffic at Panchvati,Parimal Gardens,Ambawadi,Mithakali Crossroads,Nehru Bridge and Stadium Circle. Sub-Inspector Kahar,who has the charge of handling the Blackberry system,said that although the policemen were trained to use the Blackberry,“they have not grasped it well”.

According to Anarwala,policemen would be given both the instruments to use and ascertain as to which is more user-friendly. “Both the pilot projects would go on for a couple of days before we chose one of them as a permanent device,” he said.

A team of senior traffic police officers will undergo a three-day orientation session on the PDA system in Hyderabad,who will later train the city traffic police.
