Kiren Rijiju has been one of the key ministers in Narendra Modi cabinet since the BJP came into power in 2014. In 2024, Rijiju has also been given the charge of the Ministry of Minority Affairs. In the previous BJP government, Rijiju held the portfolios of Food Processing Industries, Earth Sciences, Law and Justice, Youth Affairs and Sports as an independent Charge; and was a Minister of State (MoS) for Minority Affairs.
Rijiju, who is a member of the Parliament in Lok Sabha from Arunachal West. Rijiju, 51, took over as law minister in July 2021. He was promoted to a Cabinet rank from being a junior minister with independent charge of Youth Affairs and Sports. His elevation came as a surprise for many since Rijiju, even as a law graduate, was an outsider to the legal fraternity.
Things went against Rijiju after he took on the judiciary on several issues from the appointment of judges and accountability to court vacations. When the judiciary had complained of a delay in the appointment of judges, Rijiju had said, “If the government is sitting on files, then don’t send the files.”
Rijiju's criticism drew a sharp response from the Supreme Court, rekindling the debate on the collegium system of appointing judges. It was during his time as law minister that in an unprecedented move, the collegium made the objections of the government public.
However, as the Minister of Law and Justice, Rijiju introduced a number of reforms, such as the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC), which aims to make the appointment of judges more transparent and accountable. He has also introduced the Whistleblowers Protection Act, which aims to protect whistleblowers from retaliation.
In the BJP government, Rijiju has held a number of ministerial positions before taking up as the Minister of Law and Justice. He was the Minister of State for Home Affairs from 2014 to 2017. In 2017, he was appointed as the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs and Sports.
Born on November 19, 1971 in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh, Rijiju is a member of the Nyishi tribe. He studied at St. Edmund's School, Shillong and then at Hansraj College, Delhi University, where he graduated with a degree in Political Science. He also holds a law degree from the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi. Rijiju began his political career in 1999, when he was elected to the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Dibang Valley constituency.
