Jyotiraditya Scindia, who was sworn in as a Cabinet minister in the Narendra Modi 3.0 government, was allotted telecom portfolio in the new cabinet after NDA formed government again in June 2024. He was alloted the cabinet role in 2021. Scindia was in the Congress for a long time and was considered a close associate of Rahul Gandhi. He quit the party and joined the BJP in 2020 following differences with its leadership, especially in his home state Madhya Pradesh, leading to the fall of the Kamal Nath-led government. Scindia was born on January 1, 1971 in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. He is the son of the late Indian politician, Madhavrao Scindia, and a grandson of Jivajirao Scindia, the last ruler of the princely state of Gwalior during the British Raj in India. Scindia was educated at The Doon School, Campion School, Harvard University, and Stanford University. Madhavrao Scindia represented Guna till his death in September 2001, which marked the entry of Jyotiraditya Scindia into politics. He fought the bye-election from his father’s constituency in 2002 and won the seat. He was re-elected from Guna Lok Sabha seat in 2004 general elections. In 2007, he was appointed the Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology. He was elected for a third Lok Sabha term in 2009 and became Minister of State for Commerce and Industry. In 2012, Scindia was appointed as the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power and Corporate in the second term of the Manmohan Singh government. He held this position until 2014. In 2019, after being associated with the Congress party for nearly two decades, Scindia made a significant political move. He joined the BJP, a decision that sent shockwaves through the political landscape of Madhya Pradesh. Scindia's switch to the BJP also reflected his disillusionment with the internal dynamics of the Congress party. Scindia's move led to the collapse of the Congress-led government in the state and triggered a series of political realignments. He played a crucial role in ensuring the formation of a BJP government in Madhya Pradesh and was duly rewarded for his efforts. Like his father, Scindia is also a cricket enthusiast and was the chairman of the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association. Madhavrao Scindia was the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India from 1990 to 1993. Interestingly, his father was part of a rebellion in 1996 and had floated a separate political outfit called Madhya Pradesh Vikas Congress, which was part of the third front government in 1996. However, he returned to the Congress fold later.
