
Janmashtami, Lord Krishna's birthday is celebrated all over India, albeit in slightly different ways. This is the reason it has many names like Krishnashtami, Saatam Aatham, Gokulashtami, Ashtami Rohini, Srikrishna Jayanti, Sree Jayanti apart from Janmashtami. In Maharashtra it is called Dahi Handi. In Tamil Nadu, it is called Gokulashtami. Janmashtami is also celebrated in Nepal. Hindus celebrate Janmashtami by fasting, worshipping the god Krishna and staying up until midnight to offer prayers. In Maharashtra, people celebrate by making a human pyramid and breaking an earthen pot filled with curd that's tied at a height.
