September 27 marks World Tourism Day, commemorating and celebrating the love and passion for travel and exploring news places and people. Though for people who love to travel, anything could become a reason to pack their bags and just vanish, there are certain things that are seen across regions and cultures that define the travel trends of a particular region.
On this World Tourism Day, however, Airbnb — an online travel company that enables people to rent homes in over 191 countries — looks at six travel trends that have dominated the culturally diverse Asia-Pacific region (APAC), with each country displaying unique attributes motivated by varied cultural nuances.
Every season is a reason (to travel)
Travel in APAC is determined by a seasonality trend that emerges during each holiday period. While in India, Eid, Dussehra, Christmas, New Year, Good Friday and school holidays in June are when people hit the roads, in China, it is during the National Golden Week, Christmas New Year, Lunar New Year, Labour Day, Dragon Boat Festival, etc.
Quick-fix travel for the spontaneous soul: People have been impromptu and more adventurous with their travel decisions, Airbnb has analysed. Travellers make quick domestic bookings in APAC region, which shows there are more impulsive decisions to travel with shorter booking times as opposed to international bookings made.
Love for long distance
While people have been spending more time and money on their international travel plans, the shorter domestic trips the travellers embark on, are less expensive and within a considerably lower price range.
Travelling with the clan
Another key observation the company made was about the occasions when people travelled solo, or with friends or with family. In India, families travelled to domestic destinations the most on Christmas, Good Friday and school holidays.Couples made international trips mostly during Eid and Good Friday and most people travelled solo to international destinations.
In Australia, the seasons mostly determine people’s trips. During spring holidays, there are more bookings by couples than by families and friends, while Christmas and New Year sees more families planning trips.
Journeys of self-discovery: A culture of finding themselves through solo trips is increasingly becoming common among the Asian population. Be it backpacking, trekking or an impromptu trip, people are travelling solo more and more to find meaning and peace.
London, Paris, New York: People in the APAC region are increasingly taking a liking to the cosmopolitan cultures and the diversity seen in London, Paris and New York and hence, features among the top choices for international vacations, while the domestic destinations Indians usually head to are Goa, Mumbai, New Delhi, Pondicherry, Lonavala, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Chennai. People from Australia mostly head to Bali, Tokyo and Los Angeles in addition to London and Paris.
