Spiritual leader and founder of the Art of Living Foundation, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, visited Hurriyat leader and the Kashmir Valley’s chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq in Srinagar on Thursday.

At the meeting, which took place at the Mirwaiz’s residence in the Nigeen area of Srinagar, the two discussed peace, compassion and inter-faith harmony, the Mirwaiz said in a statement.

“Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, visiting Kashmir after seven years, expressed happiness at being back in the Valley and lauded its spiritual and cultural heritage as a symbol of coexistence,” the statement said.

It also said that the institution of the Mirwaiz remains “committed to peace and dialogue as the most humane and effective means of addressing issues and resolving differences”.

“Both leaders agreed that injustice and disempowerment lead to radicalisation that threatens peace,” the statement said, adding that the Mirwaiz appreciated Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s anti-drug outreach in the Kashmir Valley. “Both leaders agreed that sustained dialogue and mutual understanding are essential to promote peace and human dignity,” the statement said.
