Factions led by Trinamool Congress councillor, party MLA clash

Sunanda Guha, TMC councillor of Ward 31, lodged a police complaint against state consumer affairs minister Sadhan Pandey and his daughter.

A factional clash broke out between two groups of Trinamool Congress on Monday morning at Canal Circular Road in Phoolbagan area in the eastern part of the city.

Sunanda Guha, TMC councillor of Ward 31, lodged a police complaint against state consumer affairs minister Sadhan Pandey and his daughter, alleging that a group of youths led by the duo had heckled Guha and her supporters.

“I was on my way along with some supporters to attend a meeting with officials of the water supply department. Out of nowhere a group led by local MLA Sadhan Pandey and his daughter attacked us. They were in an inebriated state and were armed with hockey sticks and firearms,” said Guha.

Pandey, however, counter-alleged that he had come there to oversee work of a pipeline installation when he was attacked by Guha and her men. He claimed that the councillor was hand in glove with Paresh Pal, MLA of the adjoining Beliaghata constituency and his long-standing rival, with whom she planned the attack. “Ward 31, which falls under my constituency, has a shortage of drinking water and I wanted to take the issue with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Guha’s proximity with Pal is well-known. I was on my way to hold a meeting today when she, along with some hooligans who are patronised by Pal, tried to attack us and fled after locals resisted. Later Guha had put in a false complaint against me,” Pandey said.

Police said a complaint has been received in the matter and they were probing into it to find out what exactly happened. “Pandey and Pal have got into fights earlier as well at regular intervals. We are investigating into the matter but this regular fracas between the two leaders has become a major concern for us,” said a senior police official.
