SOL offline admission no smooth affair

SOL officials claimed the admission process was smoother than before and that the majority of students faced no problems.

The Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS), a students’ organisation of Delhi University (DU), has claimed that students were facing difficulties securing offline admission in the BA Programme course of the School of Open Learning (SOL). Offline admissions began on Thursday.

“The problem is that the entire admission procedure is being conducted at various IDBI Bank branches. Students were confused as no one from SOL was present to assist them in case they had queries about the form. Moreover, unlike regular DU colleges where the price of the prospectus for the SC/ST category is lower than that for general students, SOL has a common price of Rs 100,” Subhash, a KYS activist, said.

Students agreed. “I took admission from the Azadpur branch of IDBI, but no one was there to help me. I wanted to ask when I would get books and when classes would start. The bank told me to go to the SOL campus but when I went there, they sent me to the bank again,” Atul, a student, said.

He added that he wanted to take offline admission because he thought it would be more reliable but didn’t realise that he would have to pay Rs 100 for the prospectus. “I paid Rs 50 in regular DU colleges because I belong to the SC category,” he said.

SOL officials, however, claimed the admission process was smoother than before and that the majority of students faced no problems.

“Firstly, there are only 100-odd students who have taken offline admission in BA Programme. The rest (roughly 9,900) have chosen the online medium. The prospectus is also available for free online so I don’t see a problem. Moreover, since our institution caters to EWS (Economically Weaker Section) students, we refund the prospectus money for BPL (Below Poverty Line) students,” SOL director Prof C S Dubey said.

He said allowing admissions in bank branches was done to decentralise the process and make it more student-friendly.
