Govt trying to separate UCMS from DU: Council member writes to president

It says 'any move on the part of the govt to take away UCMS from DU may result in deterioration of standards in medical education'.

Alleging that efforts were being made to take away the University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS) from Delhi University, a member of DU’s executive council has written to President Pranab Mukherjee and has asked him to intervene in the matter.

Claiming that “administrative manoeuvres” were being made by the Delhi government, the letter to the President — who is also the DU Chancellor — said that “any move on the part of the government to take away UCMS from DU may result in deterioration of standards in medical education, research and patient care.”

The letter, written by EC member Aditya Narayan Misra, further said, “Apart from the college losing its academic leadership, bureaucratic control by the government will only stifle research in the hospital. Besides, UCMS would also lose the benefits of being governed by a central university.”

“The issue of dual administration of UCMS and Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, which is associated with UCMS, has been unresolved for several years now,” a teacher said.

He further said that a court had provided three options to resolve the issue — conversion of UCMS-GTBH into an autonomous body, transfer of UCMS to Delhi government or transfer of GTBH to DU.

“As there were problems with all three options, the court handed the matter to the Centre and had asked the Cabinet to take a decision. Following that, efforts have been made to transfer UCMS to the Delhi government,” the teacher said.

While UCMS Dean O P Kalra declined to comment, university authorities could not be reached for comments.
