In a tragic incident reported from Honolulu, a small cargo plane crashed into a vacant building on Tuesday afternoon and burst into flames, which killed both the pilots on board the aircraft, authorities have said.

Kamaka Air Flight 689 crashed into an empty building at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport on Tuesday at around 3:15pm, the US aviation regulator Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said.

A video of the plane shows the airplane flying sideways in the airport area at low altitude before crashing with the building, creating a thick black smoke.

According to an audio obtained by the Hawaii News Now, the control tower asked pilots of Kamaka Flight 689, “Kamaka Flight 689, you’re turning right, correct?” To which the pilots responded saying, “Kamaka 689, we are, we have, uh, we’re out of control here.”

The control tower said, “OK, Kamaka 689, if you can land, if you can level it off, that’s fine. Any runway, any place you can do,” reported Associated News. But the plane crashed a few moments later.

Kamaka Air CEO David Hinderland said that the names of the two pilots have not been released and added “It is with heavy hearts that Kamaka Air confirms the loss of two members of the Kamaka Air family in an accident.”

However, the local media reported that family members of the first pilot identified him as Hiram Defries, a Punahou School graduate in his 20s who was a pilot in training, while the second pilot was identified as Preston Kaluhiwa, a graduate of Kamehameha Schools.
