Kailash Sirohiya, Chairman of the Kantipur Media Group, was arrested by the police allegedly over possession of multiple citizenship certificates. The company publishes the dailies, The Kathmandu Post and Kantipur.
The act has put Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane at the dock as Sirohiya said the arrest is an act of vendetta for reporting on alleged financial irregularities, an issue that has been dominating debates in Parliament.
Sirohiya was arrested from his office in Thapathali and was taken to Dhanusha district, where he will be produced before a court.
“It is clearly an act of vendetta as I am being arrested on the basis of an anonymous complaint at the wish of the Home Minister who himself faces charges of possessing two passports”, Sirohiya said.
Lamichhane was disqualified as an MP in 2022 December after it was found that he abandoned his Nepali citizenship to acquire a US citizenship at the time of elections. But he regained his citizenship and won the same seat in a by-election.
