US judge grants request to unseal sex offender Jeffrey Epstein grand jury records

The order by Judge Richard M. Berman of the Federal District Court in Manhattan came just a day after another judge approved a similar request concerning Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s longtime associate who was convicted for aiding his sex-trafficking operation.

A US federal judge Wednesday authorised the unsealing of records from the grand jury investigation into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following the passage of a new law that compels the Justice Department to release all Epstein-related files by 19 December.

The order by Judge Richard M. Berman of the Federal District Court in Manhattan came just a day after another judge approved a similar request concerning Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s longtime associate who was convicted for aiding his sex-trafficking operation.

Together, the rulings open the door to the most extensive public disclosure yet of federal inquiries into Epstein and Maxwell. The release will include grand jury transcripts as well as a vast collection of investigative documents that, for years, remained sealed under protective orders during the discovery process.

In a four-page order, Judge Berman said the government’s motion was being granted “in accordance with the Epstein Files Transparency Act and with the unequivocal right of Epstein victims to have their identity and privacy protected.”

“Clearly victims’ safety and privacy are paramount,” he wrote.

The Epstein Files Transparency Act, enacted by Congress last month, mandates that all disclosures be made with redactions shielding victims’ names and other identifying details.
