Meta announced on Tuesday that teenagers on Instagram will now see only PG-13 content by default, and they cannot change these settings without parental approval.
Under the new rules, teen-specific accounts will display photos and videos similar to a PG-13 movie rating — excluding content featuring sex, drugs, dangerous stunts, or other potentially harmful material. Meta explained in a blog post that posts containing strong language, risky stunts, or items like marijuana paraphernalia will be hidden or not recommended. The company called the update the most significant since introducing teen accounts last year.
All users under 18 are automatically placed in restrictive teen accounts unless a parent or guardian allows them to opt out. Teen accounts are private by default, limit usage, and already filter sensitive content, such as posts promoting cosmetic procedures. Meta is also introducing a stricter “limited content” setting for parents who want additional controls.
The changes come amid growing criticism of Instagram for exposing teens to harmful content. Meta has previously promised to block posts related to self-harm, suicide, or eating disorders, but reports have found that teen accounts were still recommended inappropriate sexual content and posts promoting self-harm and negative body image.
The new safeguards prevent teens from following accounts that consistently share age-inappropriate material or contain unsuitable names or bios, including links to platforms like OnlyFans. Accounts deemed inappropriate will also be blocked from interacting with teens via comments, messages, or follows.
Meta is expanding its search term restrictions beyond sensitive topics like suicide and eating disorders to include terms such as “alcohol” and “gore,” even when misspelled. Additionally, PG-13 guidelines will apply to AI chats for teens, preventing age-inappropriate responses.
The “limited content” option allows parents to further restrict content visibility and engagement, giving families more control over what teens can see and interact with on the platform.
