Amid continued high alert across Jammu province, the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Sunday seized the telescope of an assault rifle from an area near the NIA headquarters here.
The telescope, bearing Chinese markings and used as an attachment to sniper and assault rifles, was found lying in a piece of land with wild growth between the NIA office and the Jammu and Kashmir Police’s Security Headquarters. The battalion headquarters of the CRPF and the Seema Suraksha Bal (SSB) are also located close to the spot.
While senior police officers who rushed to the spot remained tight-lipped, sources said the seizure of a Chinese telescope — used as an attachment to assault and sniper rifles by terrorists — near four vital security installations has sounded alarm bells among security agencies already on high alert following inputs about possible infiltration under the cover of fog from across the border.
For the last four days, the Jammu and Kashmir Police and other security forces have been jointly conducting search operations from areas near the international border to the mountains along the Line of Control to rule out any possibility of infiltration.
The searches — part of an area domination exercise — followed intelligence inputs suggesting possible infiltration attempts taking advantage of fog amid a sudden surge in terrorist activity at launch pads across the international border along Jammu, Samba, Kathua and Rajouri districts.
A senior BSF officer had said last month that nearly seven months after suffering large-scale damage to its defence infrastructure during Op Sindoor by India, Pakistan has again activated nearly 72 terror launch pads opposite Jammu province in areas not far from the border.
These terror launch pads have been set up in depth areas close to the border, he had said, adding that 12 terrorist launch pads have become active in the Sialkot and Zafarwal areas near the IB and another 60 across the LoC.
